The Greensboro Swarm Media Day took place today (Tuesday, Oct. 27) at Novant Health Fieldhouse in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Media Day gave Swarm fans a first look at the defending champions don their threads ahead of the new season. It also gave members of the media a chance to ask a few questions to the major players in the Swarm organization. We got a chance to hear from President Steve Swetoha, Head Coach Zach Peterson, General Manager Mike Pires and several players, including Josiah Allick and former NC State Wolfpack Jarkel Joiner.
Leadership and players were both super excited to begin their season as defending G League Champions. I asked Swetoha what were some things he was excited about and looking forward to this season from an operations standpoint.
“Raising that banner next Friday Night, it’s going to be a good opportunity to celebrate [the championship] and just close the book on 2025-2026,” Swetoha told reporters.
It’s clear the excitement in the Triad is at an all time high for the upcoming season.
When the Swarm raise last season’s championship banner, the team will look much different than it did a year ago, from top to bottom. Changes include a new head coach, a new general manager, new assistant coaches and a slew of new players. Only two players return.
All coaching and front office changes can be found here.
When I asked Allick, as one of the two carryovers from the team season, what he hopes to communicate to the newcomers to keep up the team’s championship pedigree. He said a lot goes into it, but he thinks everyone on this team is already receptive and connected, and the transition should be more or less seamless as they figure out how to play together.
Allick added, “I think we’re in a really good place. Because a lot of the guys [the front office] brought in that have experience in the G League are all very level-headed, proven, play winning basketball kind of guys.”
There were also a few familiar faces at G League Media Day. Jarkel Joiner, who played for NC State during the 2022-2023 season, is a two way player for the Hornets this year. Meaning he will play for both the NBA team and G League team.
Joiner has gotten some minutes for the Hornets already this season. I asked if that gives him any confidence coming back to the G League.
“It gives you great confidence,” Joiner said. “Learning from the guys up top, Coach Lee is a great coach, and all the other coaches are great, man… It gives me a lot of confidence to come back and play in the G.
He was also asked about what is was like being back in the state of North Carolina.
“It feels good! I feels like second home, so just blessed to be back,” Joiner told reporters.
All in all it looks to be an intriguing season for the Defending G League Champions. Interested in catching them play this year? Catch them in action next Friday (Nov. 6) as they take on the Long Island Nets at 7 p.m. They will ofcourse unveil their 2025-26 NBA G League Championship Banner
